Listen: Artisan P Interview on My Little Underground Podcast
Earlier this month, Artisan P returned to My Little Underground for another interview with host Peter A. During the chat, the new album Direct Flights 2 is discussed; about its concept, how the album came together, and how the rapper challenged himself over this batch of DJ Proof’s beats Listen to the interview below:
Direct Flights 2 is available now on CD, digital purchase, and streaming everywhere.
Direct Flights 2 is the new LP from rapper Artisan P and producer DJ Proof. After a few encounters around the Miami bar scene a decade ago, the two recognized their mutual appreciation of 90s era hip-hop. They soon began collaborating on a few tracks that eventually led to their 2016 debut EP, Direct Flights, which this release serves as the full-length follow up.
The idea of Direct Flights 2 started to take form when Proof set aside a batch of beats he thought would be perfect for Artisan P, who at the time was on the heels of the release of his own solo debut album. Intrigued by some of the beat choices, Artisan P immediately penned two songs, “Daydreams” and “Get Away”. Taking advantage of this sudden spurt, the duo discussed putting together another album. Although the batch featured some of the signature sounds the two are known for, there were a few beats that felt like new terrain for the emcee.
In carrying the spirit of their debut, Direct Flights 2 takes little time to showcase their stylistic range. But unlike the original, the pacing of this second album is looser and more free within each track. Production-wise, DJ Proof bounces from blasting soulful boom-bap beats, rolling jazzy drum-less loop, then into lush serenades that open up a lot of space for Artisan P. Through those tonal changes, Artisan P adapts seamlessly between each track. Lyrically, Artisan P touches on the hopefulness of escaping the mundane day in/day out routine, while still appreciating the flawed world around him. He sounds hungry, and almost desperate to make moves professionally as a rapper, and to continue to grow on a personal level.
